Quick start
Updated October 28, 2026
From nothing to an agent writing a file into a room and reading it back, in about five minutes.
What you need
- A Terebyte account. A free account has 5 GB, which is plenty to try this.
- The computer where the agent runs, with Node.js 20 or newer (for the JavaScript kit) or Python 3.9 or newer (for the Python kit).
- Five minutes. You'll type one 6-character code; you never copy a key.
1. Make a room (optional)
A room is a folder with its own key. An agent only ever reaches the rooms you open to it.
- To use a folder you already have: in Files, open the folder's menu and choose Make this folder a room. Nothing is re-encrypted or uploaded again; the folder simply gets its own key.
- Or skip this step. When you approve the agent in step 3, you can give it a new, empty room named after it.
2. Pair the agent
On the agent's computer, run one of these:
npx terebyte pair --name Claudepip install terebyte
terebyte pair --name ClaudeThe program makes the agent's own keys (they stay in ~/.terebyte and are never shown) and prints a code:
Your code: 4K7QXM
In Terebyte, open Rooms → Connect an agent, and type it (it works for 10 minutes).4K7QXM is an example. Leave the program running: it waits for your approval.
By default the program asks for read, add, change, for today. You can ask for something else with --can and --length (see the kits), but you decide on the approval screen either way.
3. Approve the door
- In Terebyte, open Rooms in the sidebar.
- Under Connect an agent, type the code and press Connect.
- Terebyte shows the agent's name, the computer it runs on, and what it asks for. Check the name.
- Choose the Room (a new, empty room, or one of yours), what it may do (Read, Add, Change, Delete, Share) and For how long (1 hour, Today, 30 days, Until closed).
- Press Approve.
On the agent's computer, the program says:
Done: a door to “Claude”. Run `npx terebyte mcp` from your agent's tool.4. Write a file
echo "# Hello from my agent" > hello.md
npx terebyte put hello.md Notes/hello.mdThe file is encrypted on the agent's computer before it leaves. Notes is made inside the room if it isn't there. With Python, the same command is terebyte put hello.md Notes/hello.md.
5. Read it back
npx terebyte ls
npx terebyte cat Notes/hello.mdls lists every file in the room with its size; cat prints the file, decrypted on this computer.
6. See it in Terebyte
- Open the room in Files:
Notes/hello.mdis there. - On Rooms, the agent's card shows what it did under Activity and Undo. Undo puts back everything it did since a time, or one file.
7. Give it to your AI agent
To let Claude Code use the room through its tools:
claude mcp add terebyte -- npx terebyte mcpWith the Python kit: claude mcp add terebyte -- terebyte mcp. Then ask Claude what rooms it can reach. See the MCP server.
If something goes wrong
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| "The code wasn’t used in time." | The code lasts 10 minutes. Run pair again for a new one. |
| "That code isn’t waiting." | Check the code, or ask the agent's program for a new one. |
| "The code didn’t match on both sides." | Someone typed a different code, or something in between changed the messages. Run pair again. |
| "This door can’t be used." | The door expired, was paused or revoked, or all agents are paused. Check the agent's card on Rooms. |
| "No doors yet" | This computer's agent hasn't been approved anywhere yet. Run pair. |
